About the museum

The Antikenmuseum Basel houses an outstanding collection of Egyptian, Greek, Italic, Etruscan and Roman works of art. It is the only museum in Switzerland exclusively devoted to ancient art and the cultures of the Mediterranean region. The museum introduces its visitors to epochs of cultural history that still have an impact on present-day society – the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman eras in particular. Based on a range of first-class objects we outline the history, religion, philosophy, art, literature and everyday life of these cultures, which had a crucial impact on the course of world history and on the development of the western world.

The museum is supported by Canton Basel-Stadt. The staff of the Museum of Ancient Art maintain and present its collections on behalf of the canton. However, the museum views its role as being more than that of a curator of cultural goods; it also strives to be a dynamic institution within the museum landscape by staging special exhibitions that have gained widespread attention far beyond the Swiss borders, including „Agatha Christie and the Orient“,  "Tutankhamun. The Golden Beyond" or "Petra. Marvel in the Desert".

Situated in the centre of the city, the Antikenmuseum Basel is a meeting place for people with an interest in ancient cultures. We offer workshops for schools and adults. The museum also has a bistro and a shop, both of which are accessible to all.
